Pokemon FireRed Team Builder
A Pokemon FireRed team builder should respect what the cartridge actually gives you: a Kanto dex, dual-version exclusives, and HM chores that eat party slots if you are not careful. FireRed and LeafGreen are the remakes everyone returns to — and the place where “six favorites” still wipe to Lorelei’s Ice spam.
Use this page as a planning brief, then open the in-browser FireRed / LeafGreen planner to test coverage live.
What makes FireRed team building different
- Gen 3 type chart — no Fairy. Dark and Steel exist, but many modern answers do not.
- HM slaves matter. Cut, Surf, Strength, Flash, Rock Smash, and Waterfall still tax the party.
- National dex is gated. Plan with what is catchable in Kanto first; transfers are optional.
- Elite Four is type-themed. Lorelei, Bruno, Agatha, and Lance punish mono-type cores hard.
Core roles for a FireRed party
- Starter axis — Venusaur walls Water/Ground; Charizard needs Rock answers; Blastoise hates Grass/Electric.
- Electric or Grass — answers Water spam from Misty through the Sevii routes.
- Ground or Fighting — punches Steel/Normal and helps late game.
- Psychic or Ghost — covers Fighting and Poison cores common in Kanto.
- Ice or Rock coverage — critical for Lance’s Dragonite line if your STAB cannot touch them.
- Utility / HM flex — Surf plus a second Water move often live on the same mon.
Sample balanced skeleton (FireRed)
- Starter (your pick)
- Electric (Pikachu line / Magnemite mid-game)
- Ground (Sandslash / Dugtrio / Marowak)
- Water or Ice coverage (Lapras is classic glue)
- Psychic or Fighting (Alakazam / Hitmon path)
- Flex — Snorlax, Arcanine, or Rock for Flying/Ice holes
This is not a tier list. It is a team builder Pokemon FireRed checklist: every slot should erase a red type on the defense board or add a STAB you lack.

- Too much Fire + Flying. Rock and Electric become run-enders.
- No Ground answer for Electric. Lt. Surge is early; late Electric still appears.
- Ignoring Ice into Lance. If nothing hits Dragon well, the run stalls.
- Six special attackers. Physical walls in the late game eat the party alive.
How to use this FireRed team builder
- Open the planner and choose FireRed / LeafGreen.
- Add six species available in the Kanto dex for your version.
- Watch the defense tally — red means multiple teammates are weak there.
- Swap one mon at a time until red tiles drop and STAB coverage spreads out.
- Copy the share link so you can rebuild the same party later.
FireRed team builder FAQ
Is this the same as a Pokemon Showdown FireRed team?
No. Showdown focuses on competitive formats and full movesets. This FireRed team builder is for in-game type coverage, availability, and shareable story parties.
Does the planner include LeafGreen exclusives?
The FireRed / LeafGreen game mode uses that title’s dex list so you can plan for either version’s catch pool.
Can I share my FireRed team with a friend?
Yes. Draft the six, use Copy link, and send the URL — the party is encoded in the page hash.
